Between the Karst and the Adriatic

Panoramic view from castle Socerb in Slovenia to adriatic sea with bay of city Muggia and Triest in Italy, Europe

At the southernmost point of the Gulf of Trieste, beneath the edge of the Karst plateau, lie the picturesque villages belonging to the San Dorligo della Valle/Dolina municipality.

Here, the landscape opens up to the Val Rosandra/dolina Glinščice and the Ospo Valley, where the meeting of karst terrain and flysch has created striking natural formations. The beautiful Val Rosandra is home to a nature park, a favourite destination for hikers seeking the peace and beauty of unspoiled nature. From its scenic viewpoints, you can still spot the remains of fortifications and outposts that once guarded these important routes.

Open Minded, yet Rooted in Tradition

The compact villages, set among terraced landscapes with their charming churches and pointed bell towers, invite visitors to wander along hidden paths and take in breathtaking views. On the terraced hills of Breg, olive groves and vineyards have been cultivated for centuries, forming the heart of the region’s heritage.

The villages truly come to life during Carnival and in spring, when the colourful maji—tall tree trunks decorated with ribbons, garlands, and flags—are raised. These events bring the community together for celebrations filled with music and dancing. One of the most captivating is the Majenca, a festival held on the first Sunday of May in San Dorligo della Valle/Dolina. Throughout the year, visitors are welcomed into the warmth of the local osmizze, traditional farmhouses offering a family-like atmosphere.

Sunlit Hills with Stunning Views

The medieval village of Muggia/Milje and its promontory were part of the Republic of Venice for centuries, forging a strong connection with nearby Istria. In the past century, the flatlands of the municipalities of San Dorligo della Valle/Dolina and Muggia have been transformed by the development of various industries, which have left a significant mark on the landscape. Winding through the hills of Muggia, where Slovenes still reside in small villages and hamlets, are cycling paths that offer breathtaking views over the gulfs of Muggia and Trieste.
