Slovene Wines in Italy: a variety of tastes and traditions

The areas where Slovenes live in Italy boast a rich wine-making tradition and an incredible variety of wines. In vineyards stretching from Alpine valleys to coastal cities, both native and internationally known grape varieties ripen. Wine-making stands as a cornerstone of Slovene agriculture in this region, producing exceptional wines that cater to every taste.

The Slovene winemakers in Italy blend respect for tradition with a spirit of innovation. While cherishing the wine-making heritage passed down through generations, they stay open to new approaches and grape varieties, creating wines that are both unique and modern.

The wines of the Karst: where stone meets vine

The limestone-rich Karst plateau creates a singular terroir that yields remarkable wines. Its mineral-laden soils gift white wines with crisp freshness and distinctive minerality, while indigenous varieties like Vitovska and Malvazija offer complex aromatic profiles. The region’s reds – Teran and Refošk – express themselves through rich tannins and earthy notes, while Prosecco from its namesake village speaks to the area’s deep wine-making roots. Each bottle tells the story of this unique landscape and the passionate vintners who tend its vines.

The Collio: where white wines meet mountain and sea

The Collio, a hilly region between the Alps and the Adriatic, has been renowned since ancient times for its fine white wines. The secret lies in its distinctive terroir – soil rich in schist and flysch that imparts remarkable minerality and complexity to every bottle. Indigenous varieties reign here, with Friulano, Rebula and Malvazija leading the way, each offering its own unique character. While these local treasures form the backbone of Collio’s reputation, international varieties also flourish, adding depth to the region’s wine portfolio. For wine lovers and nature enthusiasts alike, the Collio offers more than just exceptional wines – it’s a landscape of rolling hills dotted with charming villages where warm welcomes await.

The eastern Collio: from the Isonzo vineyards, a symphony of flavours

Where the Isonzo River flows through the Eastern Collio, diverse soils of limestone, clay and silt nurture an impressive array of wines. Here, Friulano, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Cabernet Franc develop a wide range of aromas and flavours.

The riverside vineyards are especially known for their crisp, aromatic whites – notably Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc – while the area’s Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon produce reds of remarkable distinction.
