The Natisone Valleys

Hidden Away, Sheltered by Mount Matajur

A wide-angle shot of Cividale del Friuli, Italy in the evening

The Natisone Valleys/Nadiške doline lie in the pre-Alpine landscape stretching from the northern edge of the Collio to the slopes of Mount Matajur.

The journey to these valleys starts in Cividale/Čedad, a charming town rich in history, and continues to San Pietro al Natisone/Špeter, the gateway to the Natisone Valleys, where the river flows in its distinctive green-blue hue. From there, narrow, winding roads lead up steep hillsides to villages that, until recently, were surrounded by terraced fields. Also known as Benecia/Benečija, this area is linked to the Isonzo/Soča Valley by the Robič and Livek passes.

A Strong Connection to the Valleys

In the past, people in these mountain areas dealt with harsh living conditions by occasionally descending to the plains for seasonal work or to sell apples and chestnuts—still among the most typical products of these valleys.

In the 20th century, the challenging living conditions led many residents of the area to emigrate across the globe. Yet, many of them still cherish coming back home for the holidays, and some even return for good, bringing fresh ideas and new projects. As times change, people are beginning to see the advantages of living in these more isolated places.

The Comfort of the Native Dialect

The culture of the Natisone Valleys is closely tied to the native dialect, which has nurtured a rich oral tradition over the centuries, even in the face of intense political pressures during the 20th century.

Some of the strongest advocates for the Slovene language and the right to speak one’s mother tongue were the local parish priests, who provided both spiritual and moral support to the people. Today, young people have the chance to attend the bilingual school in San Pietro al Natisone/Špeter, where the curriculum honours the diverse heritage of the Natisone Valleys.
