Val Resia/dolina Rezije is a 20 km-long glacial valley in the western Julian Alps, named after the stream that flows through it.
To the east, the valley is framed by Mount Canin, a significant feature in Resian culture, while to the west, it opens into the Rio Bianco Valley. Beyond the village of Uccea/Učja, a small parallel valley leads through Sella Carnizza/Krniško sedlo to the Soča Valley. These peculiar geographic conditions have kept the Resians largely isolated from other Slovene communities.
Isolated Yet Worldly
The Resia Valley offered its residents just the basics, so many ventured beyond the valley to find work and offer their skills. The best-known trade was knife sharpening, to the point that in Slovenia, “Resian” became synonymous with “knife grinder.” Many Resians set up their own businesses and shops across Europe, with some choosing to settle abroad for good.
Festivals That Bring People Together
The songs, dances, and Carnival of the Resia Valley are celebrated for their unique charm and beauty, and you can discover them through recordings kept at the Museum of the People of the Resia Valley. Music and dance unite the community during Carnival and the Feast of the Assumption, or šmarna miša, when even those who have moved away return to their hometowns. The valley is also crisscrossed with trails that invite exploration of the alpine pastures and the natural beauty of this mountainous landscape.
