We Slovenes in Italy are a rich, diverse, and vibrant community
We Slovenes in Italy are a rich, diverse, and vibrant community, living daily in dialogue between two nations, two languages, and two societies, which gives this area its unique character. Nestled in the heart of Europe, between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps in Italy’s far northeast, we speak Slovene as our native language. However, due to close contact with Italian, Friulian, and German, we have also developed various dialects and regional expressions. Our region’s history is marked by numerous changes and political upheavals, having been at the crossroads of different dominations that have reshaped its borders over time.
Our Territory
The Slovene community in Italy resides near the border with Slovenia. In 32 municipalities in this area, a special law protects minority rights.
