About us

Slovenians in Italy are a rich, diversified and vital community.

We connect two countries, two languages and two societies on a daily basis and thus create a unique image of this geographical area.

We live in the territory in the very center of Europe, between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps, in the far north-east of Italy (not far from Venice).

Our language is Slovenian. Due to the close contact with Italian, Friulian and German, we have also developed various dialects and conversational styles.

Our history in these places began already between the 6th and 8th centuries.

Since then, our territory has experienced many political changes and upheavals, as their borders have moved with the exchange of countries. In the 20th century, we suffered the oppression of the fascist authorities and forced Italianization.

Today, our national community is protected by a law which, among other things, enables us to have Slovenian schools.
