Since 1968, the village of Monrupino/Repentabor has celebrated its heritage with a unique festival – a real wedding performed in traditional style. Born from an initiative by the Naš Kras cooperative managing the Kraška hiša/Karst House, this biennial August celebration transforms the entire village into a living museum of local customs.
The festivities unfold over four days, with food stalls lining narrow streets and traditional pre-wedding events – from bachelor parties to serenades and the ceremonial transport of the dowry. The highlight comes on Sunday when a local couple exchanges vows in a genuine ceremony, accompanied by hundreds of guests in traditional dress. The day begins at dawn as the groom’s party gathers at the Karst House before proceeding to Col for the traditional ‘handover’ of the bride. The couple then makes their way to Monrupino’s church for the ceremony, followed by a colourful procession through the village.
Held every two years in late August, this remarkable celebration offers visitors a genuine glimpse into the area’s rich traditions and community spirit – an unmissable window into the living heritage of the Karst.
In 2025, the festival is set to take place from August 27 to 31.
